The Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure signed a contract in September 2024 with the companies SkyToll and TollNet for the development of a new electronic toll system.
The core of the contract is that the two companies will build a barrier-free payment system for toll collection within 24 months, including the infrastructure for an Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system, as well as a system that uses a toll box installed in the vehicle (DSRC, radio communication system).
According to the contract, the system must be implemented within 24 months of the contract signing, which means that the electronic toll system is not expected to launch before 2026.
Information on whether the currently required distance-based highway toll for cars will be replaced by a time-based vignette is not part of the contract. However, the system being developed is expected to be capable of ensuring a distance-based, barrier-free payment system for cars as well.
