In Croatia, there is no vignette requirement, meaning that, unlike other vignette-mandatory countries such as Slovenia, as a vehicle owner in Croatia, you do not need a vignette to use the highways. However, there is a different type of toll requirement in Croatia, namely the payment of the route-based toll. The costs for using various routes can be paid on-site at the toll stations, or you can acquire an electronic payment system (ETC) for payment.
However, these regulations could soon change: starting in 2026, the implementation of a vignette requirement is planned.
But how do these regulations affect you? Let us explain!
Since you have to pay a route-based toll in Croatia, it is important to make sure that you take a ticket at the toll station when entering the highway and do not just drive through. You will then pay for this ticket at the corresponding station when exiting the highway. If you use the electronic payment method with a transponder, the fee is automatically deducted from your linked payment method via signal.
Regardless of the toll, fines can be imposed for other relevant traffic violations.
The blood alcohol limit for car drivers over 25 years old in Croatia is 0.5‰. If you are checked and your level exceeds the limit, you face a fine of at least €395. A prison sentence and a multi-month driving ban may be imposed if your level exceeds 1.5‰. If you are caught driving with a high blood alcohol level within 24 months after the penalty is imposed, you risk a two-year driving ban and a 60-day prison sentence. Additionally, the alcohol limit for beginner drivers is 0.0‰.
In addition to violations of the alcohol limit, there are other traffic violations that can lead to fines. Inform yourself in advance about the traffic rules in Croatia and what you need to watch out for in order to avoid fines. Overall, it is important to pay attention to the toll regulations and to inform yourself about the applicable entry requirements before departure.
