The border between Hungary and Croatia extends over a length of 329 km and is located in the northeastern part of Croatia. The following article provides you with an overview of the applicable border controls and entry requirements, possible border crossings, as well as the toll regulations (vignette requirement and distance-based toll) for Croatia and Hungary. Everything you need for your next dream trip!
Both countries are part of the Schengen Area and the European Union, so no regular border controls are conducted. However, occasional security checks may occur. EU citizens only need an ID card or a passport for entry. If you are entering as a tourist, you typically do not need a visa unless your stay exceeds 90 days. Different rules apply to non-EU citizens (third-country nationals). Non-EU citizens generally need a visa for entry, depending on their country of origin.
We recommend that you check the valid requirements before departure, as new security measures can change the frequency of border controls and entry requirements.
There are various border crossings leading from Hungary to Croatia and vice versa. We have summarized the most important of these crossings for you.
The following section provides you with an overview of whether you need a vignette in Croatia or have to pay a distance-based toll.
Since there is no vignette requirement for Croatia, the toll to be paid is based on the kilometers driven on the highways and the vehicle class. Therefore, when traveling to Croatia, you must pay the fees for the distance-based toll. The toll can be paid at so-called toll stations located on the highways. Sometimes, you will receive a ticket at the beginning of the toll section, which you must pay when exiting the respective section. This ticket can be paid with cash, credit, or bank card. Additionally, cashless payment is possible through the Croatian Electronic Toll Collect System (ETC). However, the transponder for this system must be installed in your vehicle beforehand for the toll to be calculated.
Furthermore, a digital toll system with an e-vignette or toll box is planned for implementation by 2026 to allow barrier-free payment.
The following section provides you with an overview of whether you need a vignette or have to pay a distance-based toll in Hungary.
In Hungary, there is a vignette requirement for cars, trailers, and motorhomes. This is the so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), which electronically checks the toll based on the license plate. You should purchase the e-vignette online before your trip, as fines are imposed for driving a toll section without one.
Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle will be tolled at different rates. For example, cars with more than 7 seats are tolled at a higher rate than cars with fewer than 7 seats. Within the various vehicle classes, you can choose from different validity periods. If you are unsure about your vehicle class, you can find more detailed information in our guide.
You must pay a distance-based toll if your vehicle has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 3.5 t. This means that motorhomes, buses, and trucks must pay a distance-dependent electronic toll that is calculated through the HU-GO System (electronic toll collection). Thus, the distance-based toll replaces the vignette. Therefore, you no longer need a vignette.
