In 2026 (around mid to late year), a new electronic toll system will be introduced on Croatian motorways. This information comes from the draft of the Toll Collection Act, which has been made available for public discussion. As early as September 2024, the Croatian government signed a contract with the companies SkyToll and TollNet, which originally called for implementation within 24 months. As a result, the current toll booths will be replaced by a barrier-free, digital payment system.
Therefore, in the coming year, all road users will have to switch to the electronic system. Physical toll collection will be completely discontinued. If you are a driver of a light vehicle (motorcycles, cars, and vans up to 3.5 t GVW), you can choose between license plate recognition with an E-vignette and an ENC device (electronic toll device/toll box), while for heavier vehicles, payment will only be possible via the ENC device.
To register in the system, you will need to provide your license plate number. Please note that each account can only include one vehicle. This ensures that the shared use of ETC devices is prevented, meaning that families and companies with multiple vehicles will in future need to register each vehicle individually in the electronic toll system.
The transition to the digital system is expected to improve traffic flow and significantly reduce or even eliminate traffic jams at toll stations. During peak travel times, this should allow holidaymakers and other travelers a faster and above all less stressful journey. For Austrian tourists, for example, this would be a huge relief, as they often use the Croatian motorways to travel to the Adriatic.
